Sodium diphenylamine-4-sulfonate has the ability to form colored complexes with metal ions. Hence it is commonly used as an indicator to estimate the concentration of metal ions. It is also an efficient quencher of electrochemiluminescence of tris (2, 2′-bipyridine)-ruthenium
