Methyl tert -Butyl Ether (MTBE) is a clear, colorless organic liquid compound. MTBE is widely used in global markets as a gasoline oxygenate. High Purity MTBE is used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical industry and as a lab solvent. MTBE is also used as a chemical intermediate to produce high purity isobutylene.

• Methyl t-butyl ether, MTBE, is widely used as the oxygenated additive to improve the characeristics of petrol. and its production grew over 20 years from almost zero to about 16 million tonnes a year in 2002. There has now been a dramatic turnaround in the US, Canada, Japan and in Europe. It was found that even very small amounts of MTBE can contaminate drinking water. Any seepage from storage tanks in petrol stations, which is not uncommon, leads to damage to the water course, This is because MTBE is much more soluble in water than petrol and any MTBE in the ground, is carried by rainwater through the soil, whereas petrol that leaks remains close to the tank.
• Many states in the US have now banned the use of MTBE in petrol. Among the first were California and New York. These two states accounted for 40% of the MTBE used for this purpose.  Another 23 US states followed their lead within two years.  Bioethanol (from biomass) is now the favoured oxygenate in the US, Canada and Japan in place of MTBE.  Two other ethers, ETBE and TAME, are also used in the US and particularly in Europe. China and many other countries still use MTBE as their additive of choice although in China, methanol is now being used more.
• Denmark in the EU was the first to reduce the use of MTBE but the amount used in the EU varies from country to country and between suppliers. For example in Finland, the proportion of MTBE in petrol is between 10 and 15%, with an average of 12%.
• The petrol in the UK uses much less MTBE, one of the lowest proportions in Europe often with1-2% MTBE and a range from 0 to 10%.  Apparently, the British are particularly price conscious.  As MTBE is relatively costly, it is only added in significant quantities to petrol, where the high octane rating of 98 is needed.  The petrol of octane rating 95, the most used, does not need an additive.

• MTBE is biodegraded by the action of bacteria. In the proper type of bioreactor, such as a fluidized bed bioreactor, MTBE may be removed rapidly and economically from water to undetectable levels. Activated carbon produced from coconut shells and optimized for MTBE adsorption may reduce MTBE to undetectable levels, although this level of reduction is likely to occur only in the most ideal circumstances.
• According to the IARC, a cancer research agency of the World Health Organization, MTBE is not classified as a human carcinogen. MTBE may be tasted in water at concentrations of 5 – 15 µg/l.

Methyl propyl ketone (MPK) or 2-Pentanone is a medium evaporating, urethane-grade solvent. It’s commonly used as a solvent for synthetic resins as well as in gravure printing inks and cleaning and surface preparation applications for the transportation industry. Though methyl propyl ketone is comparable to methyl ethyl ketone, MPK has a lower solvency and is more expensive.
Unlike other chemicals that are produced in a lab, methyl propyl ketone occurs naturally in Nicotiana tabacum, otherwise known as the tobacco plant. It can also grow in blue cheese as a metabolic product of Penicillium mold growth. The clear, colorless liquid has the odor of nail polish and is soluble in water.

Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is an unsaturated ester that has several uses in polymer manufacturing. It is a clear liquid with a characteristic ester odor.
There are several synthetic routes to MMA. The most widely used are a three-step sequence that begins with acetone and HCN and proceeds through acetone cyanohydrin; and a two-step process that begins with the reaction of ethylene and methanol to produce methyl propionate.
By far the greatest volume of MMA is polymerized to the homopolymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The polymer is a clear plastic that is known by the familiar trade names Lucite and Plexiglas.
MMA is also copolymerized with styrene and butadiene to make an additive to poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) that improves its properties. MMA is also transesterified to make specialty methacrylate monomers.

Methoxy propyl acetate, also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, is a clear, colourless liquid with a mild ether-like odour. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with most common organic solvents. Methoxy propyl acetate is slightly hygroscopic, relatively fast evaporating and has a low viscosity. It enters into reactions which are characteristic of both esters and ethers, displaying their good solvent power.
Methoxy propyl acetate is produced by reacting propylene oxide with methanol using a catalyst.

Product Application:
Selected applications of Methoxypropyl Acetate are presented below. By virtue of its good solvent power for numerous resins and dyes, Methoxypropyl Acetate can be used as a solvent, flow improver and coalescent in coatings. It is particularly suitable for coatings containing polyisocyanates. In this case, it is important that the peroxide fraction is as small as possible, as otherwise the colour of the final product may change. It is for this reason that we stabilize our solvent with 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol(BHT). Other applications for Methoxypropyl Acetate include

As such, you have several options for specific chemicals that can be used for your paint thinning and cleaning purposes.

Product Application:
Paint thinners are solvents that can dissolve paint and reduce viscosity of paint or “thin” it for use in sprayer applicators or when simply needing a thinner mixture to work with. Because they dissolve paint they aid in removal of paint on brushes, rollers and general cleanup of spills or splatters. Paint that has been left open will begin to harden and dry and become thicker. Thinner can counteract this. A number of other solvents can be used to remove paint. These include acetone, turpentine, naptha, xylene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and denatured alcohol.
