Product Note

Types of fouling or scale cleaned using RXSOL Offshore Scale Descaler CIP Detergent
  • Limescale & other Carbonates
  • Rust & other metal oxides
  • Cement
  • Salts
  • Humus
  • Shellfish

Remarks

EFFECT ON MATERIAL
RXSOL Offshore Scale Descaler does not harm steel, copper, paint, china or rubber. When cleaning heat exchangers, for example, there is no need to remove the rubber seals.

NOTE: Zinc, galvanized steel, black iron and marble are sensitive to low pH. Use the product carefully on such materials, try a small area first. Different types of metals linked together can cause galvanic corrosion

Product Tag Identification

Offshore installations operate in some of the most demanding environments in the world. Continuous exposure to seawater, high temperatures, pressure variations, and mineral-rich fluids makes scale formation an unavoidable challenge. If left untreated, scale and fouling significantly reduce heat transfer efficiency, increase energy consumption, and accelerate equipment failure. This is where Offshore Scale CIP (Cleaning-In-Place) cleaning plays a critical role.

What Is Offshore Scale CIP Cleaning?

Offshore Scale CIP cleaning is a controlled chemical cleaning process carried out without dismantling equipment. It is specifically designed for offshore water-borne systems such as heat exchangers, pipelines, boilers, tanks, and cooling systems. Using specialized descaling formulations, CIP systems circulate cleaning solutions at controlled temperatures and flow rates to dissolve and remove accumulated deposits.

Unlike manual or mechanical cleaning, CIP ensures uniform cleaning, reduced downtime, and improved safety, which are essential in offshore environments where accessibility is limited and operational continuity is critical.

Common Types of Offshore Fouling

Offshore systems are susceptible to a wide range of fouling deposits due to constant seawater intake and process fluids. Typical fouling includes:
  • Limescale and carbonate deposits caused by calcium and magnesium salts
  • Rust and metal oxides resulting from corrosion
  • Salts and mineral scaling from seawater evaporation
  • Organic fouling such as humus and biological matter
  • Marine growth and shellfish accumulation in intake and cooling systems

Each of these fouling types affects system performance differently, making chemical CIP cleaning the most effective and versatile solution.

Why CIP Cleaning Is Essential for Offshore Operations

The benefits of offshore CIP scale cleaning extend beyond cleanliness:
  • Restores heat transfer efficiency in heat exchangers and heaters
  • Reduces energy consumption and operating costs
  • Prevents unplanned shutdowns and equipment damage
  • Extends equipment life and reduces maintenance frequency
  • Eliminates the need for dismantling, saving time and labor

In offshore facilities, where downtime can cost millions per day, CIP cleaning becomes a preventive maintenance necessity rather than a corrective action.

Typical Offshore Applications for Scale CIP Cleaning

CIP scale cleaning is widely used across offshore and marine systems, including:
  • Plate, shell-and-tube, and spiral heat exchangers
  • Water piping and circulation systems
  • Boilers and water heaters
  • Cooling rolls and air heaters
  • Storage tanks and process vessels

The process is adaptable to both closed-loop and open-loop systems.

How Offshore Scale CIP Cleaning Works

A typical CIP cleaning process involves:
  • Pre-flush to remove loose debris
  • Circulation of chemical cleaning solution at a recommended dilution ratio
  • Controlled temperature and flow rate, often around 60°C for optimal reaction
  • Monitoring pH and deposit removal
  • Final rinse and neutralization, ensuring the system is ready for operation

For heavily fouled systems, concentration or temperature can be increased under controlled conditions to enhance cleaning efficiency.

Material Compatibility and Safety Considerations

Modern offshore CIP scale cleaners are engineered to be safe for most commonly used materials, including steel, copper, rubber, paint, and coatings. However, care must be taken with zinc, galvanized steel, black iron, and marble, which can be sensitive to low pH environments. A patch test and proper monitoring are always recommended to prevent galvanic corrosion when different metals are present.

Choosing the Right Offshore Scale CIP Cleaner

An effective offshore CIP scale cleaning chemical should offer:
  • High efficiency against carbonates, oxides, and biological fouling
  • Compatibility with offshore materials and elastomers
  • Controlled reaction rates to prevent aggressive corrosion
  • Environmental compliance and ease of handling
  • Proven performance in offshore and marine conditions
Selecting the right formulation ensures safe, economical, and repeatable cleaning results.

Offshore Scale CIP cleaning is an indispensable maintenance strategy for ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and asset longevity in offshore installations. By removing scale and fouling without dismantling equipment, CIP cleaning minimizes downtime, lowers maintenance costs, and supports sustainable offshore operations. As offshore facilities continue to operate under tighter efficiency and environmental standards, CIP cleaning remains a cornerstone of effective system maintenance.
